We're Adopting!!!
As everyone knows, Chris and I have been trying to have babies for sometime now and have struck out each time. From all of the blog entries over the past year you know we've tried every infertility treatment in the books and any homeopathic procedure that may give us an inkling of hope to have our own child. We've been poked and prodded and lost our dignity along the way and have now decided that enough is enough. Being parents, is and has been our ultimate goal along the way and as you know, we're not getting any younger, so we've decided to jump feet first into the adoption process. Like anything new it's been a little intimidating and some what confusing but we seem to be making progress each and every day.
To begin the process we were required to have a home study done by a social worker that just proves we're fit both mentally and financially to adopt. So far, it's gone pretty smoothly, nothing major to announce except it just seems to take forever to get all of the required forms completed. I swear fewer people would have kids if they had to do everything it takes to adopt! The other neat thing we've had to do to prepare for the adoption has been our portfolio. Basically, it's a book that contains a snap shot of our life and everyone who has played a role in making us who we are today. It has pictures of Chris and me, the future grandparents, our house and pets and family along with our bio and a "dear birth mother letter."It will be presented to mothers and she then chooses if we are who she would like to give her baby to. I will have to admit that at first I was not thrilled about this at all. I felt like we were selling ourselves to this mother and I didn't understand why just wanting her child wasn't enough. I now see it much differently and know that if I were in her shoes I would want the best person possible to raise my child. It really has been fun going through pictures and recalling great memories over the years. So far we've had three calls from agencies wanting more information about us to show to the birth mothers. We've even gotten calls about TWINS!! Which, was quickly turned down for now!!
We're learning that in the adoption world things move very quickly even when you don't have all of the paperwork completed. With that said, we've decided to slowly get a few things (necessities) just in case they call next week and there's a baby ready and waiting. We're working on getting a crib and car seat/stroller and cannot believe the price. I have officially declared that Babies R Us is a rip off!! They are soooo over priced. I just don't see how people can afford kids and all the things that go along with them!! Thankfully we have great parents who have been very supportive about giving advice on what we need and what we could go old school on and not get. Thanks guys. We've also decided to go neutral because we just don't know so we'll eventually do the babies room tastefully in garnet and black. GO GAMECOCKS!! Currently we're in a debate on calling polka dots, circles and that they can go in a little boys room. I'm thinking ONE black wall with white and garnet polka dots with Gamecocks written in the middle would be super cute. All of this has gone over well with my good ole' hubby with the exception of that word "polka dots." I keep forgetting to call them circles!! :) All of this has been very exciting and quite dream like. Chris and I can't believe that we may be parents by the end of this year and to answer everyone's question...race and gender doesn't matter! We just want a little one! We'll continue to keep you posted on all of our progress as we head out on this journey. Thank you to everyone for all of your love and support!!
